Real Buffalo Love Story : Emily and Craig

“Craig and I met over six years ago on Ladies Night at the ever classic Caputis. I was chatting away with my best friend (and Maid of Honor) Christine. Craig and his friends were in the corner of the bar when Craig spotted me and saw what he thought was a friendly smile at him but truly was just a grin after a good joke. Craig told his friends that if this girl were to smile at him again, he would go talk to her. Sure enough, he thought he got a signal so he walked over to me and that is where our story began.”

“Craig and I were coming up on our five year anniversary in February, 2014. After many years spent in an on and off long distance relationship, we were finally able to settle together in our home in 2013. We planned a wonderful trip to Mexico with four of our friends the week of our anniversary, which also happens to be Valentines Day. The night before leaving Craig told me he had a small gift for me even though we had agreed upon no presents as the trip was enough. After unwrapping the first box I found an even smaller box as well as champagne and two glasses. I then opened the smaller box to find a bag from the jeweler. Craig got down and asked me to be his wife. We celebrated with our dogs and champagne, keeping it a secret until we got to Mexico. Our first night we toasted to a wonderful vacation and then surprised everyone with our engagement. We celebrated the whole week with great friends at an amazing resort.

We started off the day at the Courtyard Marriott Canalside, then headed to the Avanti Mansion for both the ceremony and reception because we really wanted to get married outdoors and have a non-traditional wedding. The Avanti’s Japanese Garden was the perfect place. The gardens are full of life and the reception tent is stunning. Between the unique coy pond and chandeliers in the tent, we got all we had dreamt of.
For the decor, I wanted a very simple classic feel with a fusion of boho chic. I left everything white in the tent except the center pieces which we made by ourselves; DIY bird cages with organic looking leaves and flowers. I used succulents as favors as well as escort cards as they had little tags with guests names in calligraphy. We had guests use a Polaroid camera to take pictures of themselves to paste in the guest book along with any message they wanted to leave. I had Shelley Roedel create the large beautiful signage to place around the reception area. I also made a few small chalk boards myself with little sayings for our displays. Outside, we had personalized corn hole boards and can jam for our guests to enjoy during cocktail hour.
Our favorite moments were the ceremony because it was a magical venue and the most beautiful day. Our very good friend got ordained and conducted our non-traditional ceremony in which we read our own vows. Our first dance was very special as we have loved the song, “you and me” by Dave Matthews ever since we heard it together at a concert. The bouquet toss and garter toss have the be the most comical part of the evening as the two participants put on a hilarious show for all the guests. We really enjoyed walking around to the tables of guests because it gave us time to share our special day with all the people we love.
We have been asked what’s it like to be married and my only answer is that it feels like it was meant to be.  We could not have asked for a more perfect wedding, we were able to share our special day with the people we a care most about.”
