After spending 4 years farming and gardening in Memphis, TN, Meggan Meakin returned to Rochester, NY to channel her passion for flower arranging into a sustainable business in her beloved hometown. In 2018 she became a Rochester wedding florist as owner of MoonRise Floral Design, which offers full-service and partial-service floral wedding packages to Rochester, Buffalo, Syracuse, and anywhere in-between.
Living by the idea that love is love and marriage is a human right, she is proud to support the local LGBTQ community, all while fulfilling her mission of using flowers to make the union of two people even more beautiful. The joy she feels when talking about arrangements is contagious, and clients who take advantage of her free one hour consultation know she’s just as excited as they are to have their visions brought to life.

Having learned the principles of floral design, this Rochester wedding florist is comfortable innovating beyond the older design models to create a whimsical, garden-style aesthetic that uses local flowers as much as possible. As she explains, “When it comes to quality, local is always better.”
When in season, the flowers she uses are grown locally, many from her own garden. On the day of the wedding she remains on-site until everything looks perfect, the boutonnieres have been pinned, and the bouquets handed off. When a wedding is booked with MoonRise Floral Design, the entire day is reserved for that client, guaranteeing all of Meggan’s focus, time and energy. This commitment is reflected in her reviews, with one bride exclaiming, “MoonRise Floral Design went above and beyond at our wedding. I was expecting a bridal bouquet and a few other arrangements but what we got was so much more.”
Meggan extends her generous spirit to the environment, “For me, sustainability is big. Sometimes that can seem like an oxymoron when it comes to sourcing flowers (especially during the colder months), but I strive to use techniques and growing practices that will have minimal impact on the environment. Weddings can create a lot of waste, and products are bought to be used for one day and then simply thrown away. I reuse all that I can, from tissue paper to vases to ribbon. I do not use floral foam and I compost my flower scraps. My hope is that this becomes standard in the floral industry, and I am doing my part in Rochester as much as is feasible.”
MoonRise Floral Design and its clients believe that Western New York’s resources should be utilized and respected. Working together to make their dream wedding a reality they create a connection to the local community, a benefit that Meggan does not take for granted, “Rochester is my home and I am so happy to be immersed in a creative industry with like-minded and talented people.” The feeling is mutual, as we are so happy to have this Rochester wedding florist Moonrise Floral Design as part of Buffalo + Rochester Indie Weddings.
